Because there is far less interest now throughout the world for this type of wine (and because the controls are becoming much tighter), Utiel-Requena has been experiencing harsh times. The rescue has to be a complete about face but whether it will come in time to save the bodegas is very much in question.

The vineyards of Utiel-Requena are situated around the two towns of Utiel and Requena, at heights of 1,968-2,952 feet (600-900 metres). The ground in the south consists of marl and clay underlain with sandstone, with alluvial soil in the Magro valley. The climate is continental with great differences in temperature between the hot summers and cold winters but also between day and night (up to 86°F/30°C). The most widely planted variety of grape is the native blue Bobal, but more territory is being won over by Tempranillo and Garnacha. The most important white grape is Macabeo followed by Merseguera.

Valencia cityUtiel-Requena Blancos are fine Spanish wines but they have little of their own character. They are light, fresh, and fruity. Drinking temperature fot this Spanish wine 46.4- 50.0°F (8-10°C).

Utiel-Requena Rosados are worth considering. They are mainly produced with Bobal and Garnacha and they are full-bodied, fleshy, and powerful. These are definitely rosés to drink with a meal. The choice is from ordinary rosado (Garnacha and Bobal) or for the fuller and heavier Rosado Superior (100% Bobal). Drink this Spanish wine is 50-53.6°F (10-12°C).

Utiel-Requena Tintos exist both as vinos jovenes and as Crianza types. Drink the light, fresh, and fruity young wines at parties. You can drink this Spanish wine at 53.6-57.2°F (12-14°C).

For serious use it is best to choose the better Crianza wines, usually made from Garnacha and Tempranillo. The curious climate and height of the vineyards causes the grapes to ripen here much quicker than elsewhere in Spain so that little of the older Crianza wines is to be found in Utiel-Requena. It is not customary to produce Reserva or Gran Reserva wines but a few bodegas achieve good results from blending Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink this Gran Spanish wine at 57.2- 60.8°F (14- 16°C).
