    Alicante wines

    Alicante winesAlicante Blancos are mainly made from Merseguera, Macabeo, Planta Fina and (much less these days) Moscatel Romano. These can be dry (seco), medium dry (semi-seco) or sweet (dulce). These Spanish wine are light, fresh, and above all cheap. Alicante’s future will probably lie in the white wines currently being developed that are made with Chardonnay but most of all from Riesling. The initial results, in particular those with Riesling, are astonishing. Drink these white Alicante wines as an aperitif. Drinking temperature for this Spanish wine is 46.4- 50.0°F (8-10°C).

    Alicante Rosados are made from Monastrell, Bobal, and Tempranillo. Most of them are seco, but you may also encounter the odd semi-seco rosado. Their combination of freshness coupled with fruitiness and roundness makes them ideal with all fish dishes. Drink this rosado Spanish wine at 50-53.6°F (10-12°C).

    This young, extremely fruity wine is sold according to tradition from the third Thursday of November.

    Clacking tongues suggest that the early sale ofthese wines is a marketing stunt to reduce French wine stocks.

     It is not surprising that Beaujolais Nouveau is nicknamed 'the third river of Lyon'. Others wax lyrical about the outstanding fruitiness of the new season's Beaujolais. Expertenced wine drinkers regard this young wine as heralding the results of that vintage and do not make such a fuss. They consider the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau more as a custom than a passing fad. It is up to you whether to buy them or not. In any event try to avoid the cheaper examples. Always drink the better Beaujolais Nouveau such as a Beaujolais ViJlages Nouveau chilled at about 50°F (10°C).

    The basic Beaujolais is produced as a white, rose, and red.. Light, fruity wines are made on more than 10,000 hectares of predominantly chalky soil. Drink these wines at approx. 51.8° (F11°C).

    Since the most southerly white Burgundy appellation of St-Veran came into existence the production of white Beaujolais has been significantly reduced. Beaujolais Blanc is made with Chardonnay grapes (and occasionally a little Aligote). The wine is fresh and fruity in taste and nose. Experienced wine drinkers may detect a hint of hazelnut, mint, butter and sometimes green vegetal such as green pepper (paprika).

    There are 39 communes which are permitted to call themselves AC Beaujolais Villages. The wine is soft and generous with a delightful cherry red colour and considerable scent and taste of fruit such as blackcurrant and strawberry. Drink at 51.8-53.6°F (11-12°C).{jcomments on}

    Pernand-Vergelesses (Côte de Beaune): Can be silky- smooth and fruity, but often not. Best drunk youngish.

    Pommard (Côte de Beaune): Big and solid but classy, with plummy fruit. Age well.

  • Collio Goriziano/Collio DOC



    Collio Goriziano Wine MapThis is unquestionably one of the best wine areas of Italy for white wines but the red too is of exceptionally high quality. The vineyards are sited on the hills (Collio) on the eastern side of the Judrio river, close to Gorizia. The ordinary Bianco is made from Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, and Tocai Friulano, supplemented to a maximum of 20% as required with other local grapes. This Italian wine is golden in colour, slightly aromatic, dry, refined, delicate, and harmonious. It makes an excellent aperitif. Drink this aromatic Italian wine at 46.4- 50.0°F (8-10°C).

  • Côtes du Frontonnais - Buzet French wines

    Present-day Prontonnais is a combination of two older wine-growing areas close to Toulouse: Pronton and Villaudric. The Cotes du Prontonnais, between Toulouse and Montauban, is about 2,000 hectares and the soil here is fairly poor and dry, with lots of stone and gravel, which imparts fruity aromas for this French wines. The area under cultivation by vines will increase in the near future by about one third.

    A peculiar characteristic of the Cotes du Prontonnais wines (only rose and red) is the use of the ancient native Negrette grape, which accounts for 50- 70 per cent of the vines planted. This grape provides the wine's characteristic refinement and highly fruity nature. In addition to the Negrette they also grow Cabernet Pranc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Per Servadou, Cot (known locally as Merille) and to a lesser extent Gamay and Cinsault.

    The Prontonnais rose is fairly pale in colour and very aromatic. It is quite dry with a fine taste. Drink this French wine at 10°C(50°F). The Prontonnais red is found in two types. This modern French wine is light, elegant, lithe, fruity, and often smells of blackcurrant and plum. For a good taste drink this French wine at approx. 14°C (57.2°F) . The traditional Prontonnais red is more complex, more robust, and fuller. Its bouquet is somewhat less boisterous and the taste is often deeper. You can drink this French wine at 16°C (60.8°F) .



    The vineyards of Buzet cover about 1,700 hectares in the heart of Gascony, south of the town of Buzet, on the left bank of the Garonne. Almost the entire production is controlled by the local co-operative known as Vignerons du Buzet. The vineyards of Buzet are ancient and existed before the start of the first millennium. Buzet is an exception in south-west France in being the only area that was not driven out of wine-making for many years following the phylloxera epidemic. In fact the areas cultivated during those difficult times were actually larger.

    Buzet attained VSQS status in 1953 but with the individual style and sympathetic effort ofthe united growers they achieved AC status in 1973. The area is divided into two different soil types. This French wine produced from the stony and sandy soil of the terraces is elegant and delicate. That made from vines growing in the richer ground of clay, and alluvial deposits with outcrops of sandstone is fuller, heavier, and more aromatic. Buzet produces predominantly red French wines which are made by combining Merlot, Cabernet Pranc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This French wine is a ruby red and the bouquet is reminiscent of red fruit, vanilla, and preserved fruit. You can drink this French wine at temperature: 12-14°C (53 .6-57.2°F).

    The better Buzet French wines (chateaux or estates) are more full-bodied and richer in tannin. These can be kept for 10 to 15 years and have a more complex bouquet that tends towards humus, strawberry jam, tobacco, cedarwood, and the nose of wild game. Drinking temperature for this French wine: 14-17°C (57.2-62.6°F).

  • Côtes du Marmandais

    Côtes du Marmandais

    The Cotes du Marmandais AC vineyards cover 1,800 hectares on the right bank of the Garonne on gently undulating hills with soil of gravel and pebbles, interspersed with calciferous sandstone, and chalkbearing clay.

    White Cotes du Marmandais, made with the Semillon, Sauvignon, Muscadelle and Ugni Blanc, are fine dry French wines that are fresh and fruity with a bouquet of white flowers and sometimes a note of almond. Drinking temperature for this French wine: 10- 12°C.(50-53.6°F).

    The rose is fresh, fruity, and pale. For a good taste drink this French wine at 12°C (53 .6°F). Cotes du Marmandais red is produced with the Bordeaux grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Pranc, Merlot and Malbec, supplemented with the local Abouriou and Per Servadou, and when necessary with a little Gamay and Syrah. It is better value to buy the slightly more expensive cuvees such as Richard Premier, Tap de Perbos, or La Vieille Eglise. Drinking temperature for this French wine: 14- 16°C (57.2-60.8°F) .


    Côtes de St-Mont VDQS

    The Cotes de St-Mont were admitted to VDQS status in 1981. These red and rose French wines are made using Tannat and Per Servadou, supplemented when necessary with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Pranc to provide greater roundness and finesse. This white French wine is blended from typical local varieties such as Gros Manseng, Arrufiac, Petit Manseng and Petit Courbu, with occasional use of a little Clairette.

    The red French wine area is on the eastern and southern facing hills which have two soil types. The stony ground provides a light red wine made by modern methods which is pleasing, comforting but unpretentious to drink well chilled at approx. 12°C (53.6°F). The heavier clay soil produces rounder, more fleshy French wines which can be readily kept. Drink these French wines at 12- 14°C (53 .6- 57.2°F) when young and at 16°C (60.8°F )when mature.

    The rose is soft, very pleasing, and aromatic. The taste is fruity and fresh for a French wine. Drink these French wines at 12°C (53.8°F) .

    The western hills with their soil of chalk and clay deliver very subtle, elegant white French wines. The aromatic properties of the young wine quickly changes to a complex bouquet. Drink this French wine at 10-12°C (50-53.6°F).

    In addition to the VDQS wines listed here there are also some good French wines known as vins de pays des Cotes de Gascogne, which have justifiably established themselves in the past decade.

  • Croatian Wines and regions

    Malvazija Istarska Croatian Wine

    Croatian Wine BottlesExcellent Croatian wine is made in Porec and Rovinj in the region of Istra from Malvasia (Malvazija) grapes. This is a fresh and fruity dry white. Drinking temperature for this Croatian wine is 10-12°C (50-53.6°F).

    There are also several interesting red Croatian wines from Istra of which the first choice should be the Teran. The Merlot from Istra is well made but lacks identity.

There are first class Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Riesling Renano wines and excellent Traminer Aromático, which is full- bodied, sultry, and has a very intense bouquet and taste. Drink this Italian wine at 46.4- 50.0°F (8-10°C) except the Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Traminer Aromático 50-53.6°F (10-12°C).

    The following wines are very typical of the region. Tocai Friulano: golden to lemon yellow, refined bouquet, fulsome and warm taste with discernible bitter almond note. Temperature for this Italian wine when you drink is 50-53.6°F (10-12°C).

  • La Grande Rue Grand Cru French wine


    La Grande Rue Grand CruThis French wine is Jess well-known and less complex than its companjons from Vosne-Romanee. The appellation jg relatively recent (1992) and it has yet to prove itself as a gain for the area.

    This French wine is perhaps more representative than Cotes de Nuits and the climat is somewhat larger. The colour is a clear bright ruby red and the wine has seductive aromas of cherry, other small red and black woodland fruits, with the suggestion of herbs and spices in both the nose and taste. After a number of years maturing in the bottle, a bouquet develops of toadstools and other fungus. This French wine is a little rough and boisterous when young but becomes soft and pliant after a few years.

    Drink this fine and fairly inexpensive French wine between 60.8-64.4°F(16-18°C).



    This French wine is granite red and has an jntense yet refined nose of cherry, wood, and spices which, when older, typically changes to suggestions of wild game. The taste is heady, fleshy, jwcy and velvety at the same lime. The aftertaste is often tilled with a great concentration of ripe fruit, with the suggestion of spices. Do not drink this French wine too young, certainly not before 10 years old, but also not too warm (60.8-62.6°F/16-17°C).

    Cheverny Blanc Loire FranceThe Loire is France’s longest river, flowing almost 650 miles from the foothills of the Massif Central in the Ardéche to the Atlantic Ocean west of Nantes. Fairy tale castles overlook the vineyards that flank most of the river and its tributaries. Near its source are the vineyards of Sancerre, Pouilly and the Coteaux du Giennois. Reuilly and Quincy mingle among the southern tributaries. To the east of Tours is Vouvray, and then Chinon, Bourgueil, Saumur, Muscadet and a scattering of smaller appellations as you near the sea.

The Moscato Spumante (minimum 13% alcohol) is a full and sultry sparkling wine of stuporific aromatic strength. Such a wine does not fail to evoke the emotions.     Oltrepo Pavese DOC ITALIAN Wine Region

    This area is typical of the small zones referred to in the introduction to Italian wines. The small nominated area produces about 20 different types of Italian wine from a similar number of grape varieties.  The name indicates that this area of some 40 small communities lies 'over the Po, in Pavia'. The vines grow on gently sloping hills in the south of the province. Oltrepo Pavese wines can be white, rose, red, and sparkling.



    This ruby red Italian wine is highly aromatic, full bodied, and sometimes high in tannin. In youth it often has a hint of carbonic acid to tingle the tongue. Made with Barbera, Croatina, and several other types of grape, including Pinot Nero. Drink this Italian wine at 50-57.2°F (10- 14°C) .

    Riserva has a hint of orange colour and is higher in alcohol with greater depth. Drink Riserva Italian wine at 57.2- 60.8°F (14- 16°C ).



    Prom the same grapes as the red, this Italian wine has an attractive pale cherry colour, mild taste but slight tingle. Drink this Oltrepo Italian wine at 50-57.2°F (10- 14°C) .

    A ruby red from the same grapes as the ordinary rosso but slightly sweet and with a post-fermentation tingle. The taste is full of flavour and pleasant. Drink this Italian wine  at 50- 53.6°F (10-12°C).



    Bianco or rosato, the best of these is made by the metodo classico using at least 70% Pinot Nero, (minimum 70%), and a maximum of 30% Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Bianco. A very fresh and juicy wine with much fruit that is elegant.Drink this Italian wine at 42.8-46.4°F (6- 8°C).{jcomments on}

    SAVOIE and JURA Wine Regions

    Wine Savoie FranceSavoie is close to the Swiss border, a few miles south of Geneva and most of its production is white wine, although it does produce light red and rosé. The Jura vineyards start about 25 miles north west of Geneva and, like Savoie, cover about 3,000 acres. Red, white, rosé and sparkling wines are produced, as well as the unusual Vin de Paille, so-named because the grapes are dried on straw before pressing to impart very special characteristics.

  • Rhone Wine Region

    Rhone Winecellar FranceThe vineyards of the Rhone extend from just below Lyon as far south as Avignon straddling both sides of the river but not continuously. In the north, the vineyard belt is rarely more than a few hundred yards wide, while in the south the vineyards stretch out into the widening valleys.

    The northern vineyards are hot and rocky and all the famous red wines are produced from the Syrah grape, while in the south where many of the wines are blended there have been enormous improvements in the past few years.

  • Secco and Dolce Italian Wines


    Giro Cagliari WineThis robust red from Giro grapes is made in a variety of styles. The dry Secco contains at least 14% alcohol while the sweet Dolce Naturale is not less than 14.5%. Both are sultry and extremely aromatic with the nose of freshly-picked grapes, and are fulsome, velvet smooth, and warm in taste. Drink at 16°C (60.8°F) for a Secco Italian wine and 10-12°C (50-53.6°F) for a Dolce Naturale Italian wine.

    There is also a much fuller Liquoroso version of both in Secco or Dolce Naturale (with not less than 17.5% alcohol). Drink at 16-18°C (60.8-64.4°F) for a Secco Italian wine and 10-12°C (50-53.6°F) for the Dolce Italian wine.

  • The Hungarian Wine

    tokaji-hungarian-winesAlthough vines have been grown for wine in Hungary since Celtic times - before the Roman invasion - it was the Magyars in the 9th century who increased the vineyard acreage and production. Many of the vineyards can trace their history back centuries, and some as far back as the 12th century. The Tokaj- Hagyalja region not only produces Hungary’s most famous wine, but is home to some of the oldest vineyards which were planted at the end of the 9th century. Phylloxera hit Hungary in the 1880s and destroyed three quarters of the vineyards. Those which survived were mostly planted in very sandy soil, through which the phylloxera bug cannot travel.

  • Trentino DOC

       This is generic area wine. It is difficult to give an overview because each of the growers and winemakers uses their own blends and methods.

      The Trentino Bianco is made from Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco. It is pale golden yellow and a pleasant but unobtrusive. Drink at 46.4-50°F (8-10°C).

    The better whites are of the single grape variety with their name alongside Trentino DOC on the label. The best are usually the Chardonnay Trentino wines but there are also some excellent wines made with Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Italico, Riesling Renano, Traminer Aromatico, and Miiller-Thurgau.

    Drink Pinot Grigio, Traminer, Miiller-Thurgau, and Chardonnay at 50-53.6°F (10-12°C) and 46.4-50°F (8-10°C) for the rest. The subtle wine from the native Nosiola is worth considering though do not expect great miracles, rather the discovering of a very different grape. The wine is fine and delicate, pleasingly fruity in bouquet and taste with a slight bitterness in finish. Drink at 46.4-50°F (8-10°C).

    Pinally there is an excellent sweet white wine made with Moscato Giallo. There is also a liquorous version of this wine, identified by the name Liquoroso.

    This is a first class after-dinner liqueur if well chilled to around 42.8-46.4°F (6-8°C). Pirst class sparkling wines are made with Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco. This Spumante is a remarkably fine aperitif. Drink at 46.4-50°F (8-10°C).

    Trentino Rosso DOC is made from Cabernet and Merlot and is almost always cask aged. Depending on the wine's origins it may be light and approachable or fullbodied and powerful. The full bodied type keeps well. Drink the light and amenable type while it is still fruity at about 53.6°F (12°C) and the fuller version at 57.2-60.8°F (14-16°C).

    The other type of Trentino red is made from one or two types of grape and is very characteristic of its grape and terroir. You will encounter wines made with the Cabernets (Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Cabernet Pranc) , Merlot, Marzemino, Pinot Nero, and Lagrein.

      These are all excellent but the best are the Riservas, which had at least two year's additional maturing. Drink at 57.2-60.8°F (14-16°C).

    There is also a full-bodied Spumante made with Pinot Nero. Drink at 50-53.6°F (10-12°C).

  • Valdadige DOC

       These are generic whites, roses, and reds and varietal wines made from one or more types of grape. The variety indicated on the label must account for no less than 85% of the wine. The ordinary Valdadige Bianco is permitted a wide variety of grapes including Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Italico, Millier-Thurgau,

     Chardonnay, Bianchetta Trevigiana, Trebbiano Toscano, Nosiola, Vernaccia, and Garganega. No one example of Valdadige Bianco is representative. In general these are pale golden yellow, pleasingly fresh, fragrant, but not all dry for some examples may contain sugar residues. Drink at 46.4-53.6°F (8- 12°C) depending on the style.

    There are also countless variations with the ordinary Valdadige Rosso. The choice of grape is from three varieties of Schiava, Lambrusco, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Lagrein, Teroldego, or Negrara. Depending on the style and type of wine Valdadige Rosso can vary from light red to the deepest dark red. The bouquet is reminiscent of fresh grapes and herbs and is always a delight. The wines are not all dry and you may find some slightly sweeter examples among them. Drink at 53.6- 60.8°F (12- 16°C) depending type.

    The Rosatos are made with the same choice of grapes as the Rosso and the colour varies widely. The nose and taste are fresh and fruity with a hint of old-fashioned pear drops that can be accompanied with a slight sweetness. This is a surprisingly delicious wine without pretensions. Drink at 50-53.6°F (10-12°C).

    The other varietal wines, usually made from a single grape, are characteristic of the grape and terroir from which they originate. Generally these whites are a light golden yellow colour and fresh, juicy, and can be slightly sweet with Pinot Grigio examples. Drink at 46.4-50°F (8-10°C) for Pinot Bianco 50-53.6°F (10-12°C) in the case of Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.

     The reds are made with one of three varieties of Schiava grapes (Gentile, Rossa, and Grigia), which may be supplemented with other non-aromatic grapes. This wine is ruby to granite red, slightly aromatic, freshly tart yet mellow and may also be slightly sweet. Drink at 57.2-60.8°F (14-16°C).
